When I visit schools, students often ask if they can publish a story or longer work. My answer is always, "Yes, of course!" The avenues available for young people in publishing today are much larger than they used to be, but certain principles still apply.
Recently, I came across a blog post from Jane Friedman that offered advice and good ideas about writing and publishing for young folks (and her points apply to adults who wish to enter the writing arena, too). She says:

- Keep writing, regardless of whether or not your early work seems to be good.
- Early on is the time to experiment. Try different genres, styles, voices.
- Read. Try new genres, or read deep into a single genre.
- Get a mentor who will speed your growth.
- There's no such thing as writer's block.
- There are dumb myths about writers.
- Recognize your enemy: impatience.
- Take advantage of your youth.
