Reviews of Bruce and the Road to Honesty

Valuable lessons taught all through the journey
This is the second "Bruce" book I have read by Gale Leach and I liked it even more than the first. Not only does the author incorporate insect behaviors amazingly well, but she teaches valuable lessons through the personification of those insects. (How many caterpillars do you know wear backpacks!) This book is intended to focus on the value of honesty and the gray areas that can be confusing to children. But I also found a sub-plot of value and that is when Bruce finds out that he has been adopted as a caterpillar egg. This knowledge upsets and confuses him and he sets out to find his "real" parents. As he journeys along, he questions whether he made the right choice and feels guilty for the pain he has caused his parents. This is a wonderful first chapter book for elementary school children or for parents to read to their children.

Perfect Story for Children
The author has created a set of likeable characters who, along with Bruce, will make this an exciting read. . . . The adventures are endearing and children will find them delightful and enjoyable. The book is fast paced and can hold the attention of young children. The creativity and aesthetic abilities of the writer are noticeable while reading the story, and the book has a good message which makes it a perfect story for children. I liked the open ending of the story which calls for more adventures with Stang and his bad ways. An enjoyable story for children with a lot of action and adventure.
