Bruce, a young caterpillar who is afraid of heights, doesn't want to become a butterfly. Tired of being teased and bullied about this, he leaves home, unaware that he has embarked on a heroic journey that will test both his character and his courage.

Along the road, Bruce makes some unlikely friends, including a young moth caterpillar. When she is abducted by bats, Bruce determines to rescue her, and his other friends—a mockingbird who doesn't eat bugs because she is a vegetarian, a spider who got tangled in his own web, and an aging firefly—join the quest. Their journey is perilous, and, when they reach the bats' cave, they are also captured and they learn that many more creatures are in need of help.

Bruce's unwillingness to cower any longer helps him formulate a plan that he hopes will bring them all to safety. As the adventurers work to free themselves and the others, Bruce discovers that standing up for yourself and doing what is right, even in the face of great odds, are the most courageous actions of all.

Reviews:

"I began reading "Bruce and the Road to Courage" to three fifth grade classes on the first day of school. All 97 students were instantly transfixed by the characters and literally begged for one more chapter each day. The characters and their struggles were completely real to the children. They championed for Bruce during his journey to defeat the evil Stang. Children laughed, cried, hoped, and cheered thoughout the story. Most importantly, this book engaged every student, even the most reluctant reader, and proved to be THE BOOK to turn them on to the joys of reading. I cannot count the teachable moments that occured in the reading of this book-- rich language, descriptive prose, complex plots, social injustice, the power of friendship, self worth -- truly a classic story. Students are still talking about it and writing about "Bruce and the Road to Courage", their number one favorite book. This book is a teacher's dream come true!" -- Rebecca Valbuena, Stanton Elementary School, Glendora, CA

"Bruce and the Road to Courage" is a charming novel following caterpillar Bruce who rejects his destiny as a butterfly partly out of a fear of heights and partly out of the desire to forge his own path. A moving story of standing up for oneself even under mocking, "Bruce and the Road to Courage" has a strong message for young readers who are just about to embrace novel-style books." -- James A. Cox, Editor-in-Chief, Midwest Book Review

"It is a great story, and like all good children's books, has so many things to say for all levels of comprehension. ... The book can be enjoyed by many ages on different levels. Perfect! ... Once again, my praise to you for a job well done! I look forward to Bruce's further adventures." -- Rachelle Phillips

"This imaginative, suspenseful story about Bruce is fantastic! It was fun getting acquainted with the unique characters and then following them on their journey. It's a sure hit and will entertain all ages. Truly, it's a delightful escape. I see this wonderful story being made into a movie and look forward to attending its premiere." -- Marilyn Stein

"I read your book through as soon as I got home and enjoyed it. I loved the metaphors, some subtle, some not so, and was especially pleased when one of the characters was named Walter. The story contained a damsel on the railroad tracks in every chapter and I know the young people will love it. Congratulations!" -- Dale Buhl

"I love it Gale! Thank you for writing it! We are working so hard to end bullying in schools and online...I'm recommending it to everyone!" -- Arinn Smith

"I absolutely loved the book. Very well-written with good morals, educational and entertaining as well. I could not set it down as it was such a wonderful adventure. I loved the characters and names. It brought about emotion as well in a good way. There is so much bullying in the world today, this book will relate to all children--a story to be told. ... I am so anxious for my grandchildren to read it and get their response! Truly a wonderful book." -- Renae Coburn

"My granddaughter Caitlyn (5 yrs) enjoyed your book 'Bruce and the Road to Courage.' She knew so much about the different spiders, butterflies, birds and bats. She also understood the specific lessons and values more than I thought she would. She never wanted me to stop. Kudos to you. How would you like a book review from a five year old? Her Mom is reading it to her again." -- Carolyn Madison

"A fast paced engaging read that keeps you involved and rooting for the characters. It doesn't sugarcoat some harsher truths of life, like bullying, which can be a startling change for a children's book, but a welcome one. They will learn something about life, the value of good friends no matter what they look like on the outside, and doing the right thing even when it's difficult. Lots of topics in here to discuss with your kids." -- Elizabeth Silverman

"I am 65 years old and found it a great read! I could identify with the characters easily and loved them all, except a few that is, ahem! I am purchasing it for all the kids we know in our family and neighborhood this year for Christmas. Gale is so talented! Enjoy, it is a most delightful book and similar to Charlotte's web, I think Bruce will be near and dear to the hearts of children for years to come!" -- Donna Largent
